Diverse initiatives in the Shibuya areaSHIBUYA AXSHOpened in July 2024Total floor area: about 44,500 m2Shibuya Upper West ProjectCompletion in FY2027 (planned)Total floor area: about 120,000 m2 (including Bunkamura)Implemented via a partnership between the Tokyu Group and L Catterton Real Estate, this project features a com-plex with 34 above-ground floors and 4 basement floors, which will be positioned as the node where the vibrant energy of Shibuya intersects with the serene residential streets of the Shoto district and the unique culture of the Okushibu “Deep Shibuya” area. The project aspires to create Tokyo’s newest urban retreat, providing a sanctu-ary of peace and relaxation amid the bustle of the city. Internationally acclaimed Norwegian architecture and design firm Snøhetta has been appointed to handle the architectural design, as it specializes in creating sustainable conceptual spaces tailored to the surround-ing scenery and landscape. The hotel will be the first foray into Japan by The House Collective, Swire Hotels’ contemporary luxury brand. Aiming to become a new Shibuya landmark, the development will be integrated with the Bunkamura cultural complex and will include retail offerings for sophisticated lifestyles, a world-class small luxury hotel, and rental residences tailored to a high-quality urban way of life. With a view to achieving the project’s stated sustainable development goals, we will also pursue international certification focused on the environment and sustainability.SHIBUYA+FUN PROJECTWe belong to two public-private co-operative bodies working to develop Shibuya’s appeal as a neighborhood: Shibuya Area Management Council and Shibuya Station District Area Management. To turn Shibuya into a lifestyle culture promotion hub open to the world, we are promoting urban development activities.WANDER COMPASS SHIBUYAThese centers are certified by the Japan Nation-al Tourism Organization (JNTO) as tourist infor-mation centers for foreign tourists visiting Japan. English-speaking staff are on hand at all times to pro-vide information about Shibuya Station and Shibuya district. To encourage foreign tourists visiting Japan to explore Shibuya on foot, it also offers luggage storage and other services. This year saw the opening of SHIBUYA AXSH, a large complex located in the area leading from Shibuya Station’s East Exit to Aoyama, featuring commercial facilities on floors 1 to 4 and offices on floors 5 to 23. Based on the concept of “TSUNAGI-BA”—a place of connection—this building will generate fresh vibrancy in the area around the East Exit of Shibuya Station by leveraging its links to Shibuya 2-chome’s dining zone and Aoyama’s cultural and education district. We have also developed plazas to serve as gate-ways to both the Shibuya Station and Aoyama districts, to link the complex to the pedestrian network in the vicinity of Shibuya Station’s East Exit and provide spac-es where people can gather. The plaza on the Shibuya Station side will generate footfall with the installation of a large transparent LED screen and food trucks, while the plaza on the Aoyama side will create opportunities to come into contact with artworks via the NANZUKA PUBLIC public art project run by contemporary art gal-lery and art bar opera-tor NANZUKA. We aim to make SHIBUYA AXSH an icon of the Aoshibu district, placing it alongside Shibuya’s mainstay Ok-ushibu and Shibunan neighborhoods.Establishment of Shibuya StartupsIn February 2023, we founded Shibuya Startups KK in partnership with Shibuya City, Tokyu Land Corporation, and GMO Internet Group Inc. as an organization for nurturing international startups. Its goal is to build an international startup community in Shibuya by attracting a diverse array of companies and talent to the area from overseas, and providing support enabling startups to grow and achieve success on the global stage.Exterior (artist’s impression)Image by Proloog / Copyright: SnøhettaCourtesy of SHIBUYA AXSH22
