Building on the experience gained through the de-velopment of upscale residential neighborhoods in Tokyo’s Senzoku and Den-en-chofu districts, the Tokyu Group launched its Tokyu Tama Den-en-toshi urban development project in 1953 with the goal of supplying outstanding residential areas in Tokyo, which was expected to become overpopulated at that time. After more than half a century of development since it started, the project has become one of the largest privately led urban development projects in Japan, with a total development area covering about 5,000 hect-ares, and a population of approximately 630,000 peo-ple (as of the end of March, 2018). The Tokyu Group intends to make the most of the urban development ex-pertise it has accumulated through the project in other projects it undertakes in the future.About Tokyu CorporationThe Company was founded on September 2, 1922, as Meguro-Kamata Electric Railway Company. Since then, Tokyu Corporation has focused on railway operations in suburban Tokyo, real estate and life service businesses in areas served by Tokyu lines, hotels and resorts and business support services. Tokyu Corporation continues to expand its operations in the eastern Kanagawa area of southwest Tokyo, which boasts one of Japan's most educated and affluent populations, while also demonstrating the synergistic effects of each business working in mutual cooperation. The founder of Tokyu Corporation was deeply influenced by Eiichi Shibusawa's ventures in the Den-en-toshi Company, in which railways were being developed in tandem with new residential neighborhoods. This integrated approach underlines the origins of Tokyu Corporation. This brochure provides a basic understanding of Tokyu Corporation through introducing its rail network, development projects and the wider operations of Tokyu Group. The Tokyu Group's Roots—a Railway Operator Involved in Urban Development from the BeginningTokyu Tama Den-en-toshi—the Tokyu Group’s Largest Project, Spanning Over Half a CenturyOperating Diverse Businesses and Services for Supporting People’s LivesWhile promoting urban development, the Tokyu Group has launched a series of businesses—including its lifestyle and services business and its hotels and resorts business—offering facilities and services that are essential to the lifestyles of the residents. These include educational facilities, healthcare clinics, commercial facilities, hotels and resorts, residences and services for senior citizens, and cultural facilities such as theaters and art galleries, all of which are important for people’s livelihoods and various aspects of their day-to-day lives. The Tokyu Group operates many businesses across Japan and is expanding certain business areas internationally. The Tokyu Group was founded in 1922 with the establishment of Meguro-Kamata Electric Railway Company (the predecessor of Tokyu Corporation). The company began operating the Mekama Line in 1923, offering a full train service between the Meguro and Kamata districts in Tokyo. The Mekama Line and its railway facilities were planned as part of an urban development project by Den-en-toshi Company, which had been developing land in Tokyo’s Senzoku and Den-en-chofu districts since 1918. Meguro-Kamata Electric Railway Company and Den-en-toshi Company eventually merged in 1928, creating Tokyu Corporation. Given that early history, Tokyu Corporation has operated not simply as a railway company, but also as an urban developer in communities surrounding its rail lines. From those roots, it began pursuing its vision of creating beautiful living environments for residents of those communities. Today, Tokyu Corporation’s railway business serves over 1.1 billion passengers annually. ■ Tokyu Group: One Hundred Years of Urban Development■ HistoryDen-en-chofu in 1932Tama Plaza in 1963Tama Plaza TodayFutako Tamagawa Rise3
