Shibuya Station area improvementThe neighborhood around Shibuya Station was divid-ed by roads and railway lines, while the station itself had become complex to navigate, due to the remod-eling, expansion, and relocation of facilities by the various railway companies that use it. This develop-ment project has improved flow lines, with the aim of making the district more convenient. We have sought to enhance Shibuya’s accessibility by such means as installing a pedestrian deck around the station and developing urban cores—vertical pedestrian con-nections near key station facilities. Within the station, the relocation of JR line and Tokyo Metro Ginza line platforms has increased the convenience of transfers onto the underground To-yoko and Tokyo Metro Fuku-toshin lines. We are striving to create a safer neighborhood by bolstering disaster risk reduction capabilities. As well as replacing old, run-down facilities and offices with large, highly earthquake-re-sistant build-ings, we are preparing temporary stay facilities for people strand-ed in Tokyo in the event of disaster and a warehouse for storing disaster relief supplies. Additionally, aiming to create a flood-resistant neighborhood, we have installed underground storm water tanks beneath the station, which is prone to flooding, due to its location in a valley. We are also creating pleasant spaces through such initiatives as the regen-eration of the Shibuya River via a public-private partner-ship and the redevelopment of a disused section of the To-yoko Line into a footpath called Shibuya River Street. Improvement of underground square at the East ExitWe have enhanced Shibuya Station’s functions as a transportation node by developing an underground square at the East Exit, near the Miyamasuzaka Cen-tral ticket gate. To increase convenience, we devel-oped a metropolitan bus infor-mation center and a cafe with tourist information functions that will help to distribute information and generate additional activity. Shibuya Station Area Development ProjectWe aim to create Entertainment City Shibuya to serve as a stage for spreading the message about world-leading new businesses and cultures. Starting with the 2012 opening of Shibuya Hikarie, we have been working with stake-holders in major development projects in the station area to bring this vision to fruition through a variety of tangible and intangible urban development initiatives.Greater SHIBUYA ConceptAnother advantage of Shibuya is its appealing sur-roundings. It is within walking distance of several areas with distinctive identities, including Harajuku, Aoyama and Omotesando, Ebisu and Daikanyama. The area is also home to cultural and academic institutions such as the New National Stadium and numerous universities. The Greater Shibuya con-cept seeks to take advantage of this favorable envi-ronment and, by continuing to showcase new pro-jects and culture to the world, create a metropolitan area capable of sustainable growth.By creating mechanisms for integrat-ing the three elements of work, play and home in Greater SHIBUYA, we will increase the attractive-ness of the local area.Real Estate BusinessComplex Facilities Development and OperationInside the underground storm water tanks (courtesy of the Shibuya Station Area Land Readjustment Project Joint Developers)Aoyama Gakuin UniversityJissen Women’s UniversityNHKYoyogi ParkJapan National StadiumUniversity of the Sacred Heart, TokyoKokugakuin UniversityThe University of TokyoGreater SHIBUYABunkamuraTokyo College of MusicNoh TheatreHarajukuOmote-sandoAoyamaHiro-oEbisuDaikan-yamaNaka-meguroIkejiriShotoShibuyaWithin 2.5 km of Shibuya StationFuture view from the 9th floor of Shibuya Hikarie (artist’s impression)Meiji-dori Ave.Shibuya Hikarie sideEast Exit deck (2F)Shibuya Hikarie ticket gateShibuya Scramble Square (temporary stay facilities / warehouse for storing disaster relief supplies)JR line Hachiko ticket gateUnderground Square at the East ExitUnderground storm water tanksMiyamasuzaka Central ticket gateShibuya RiverCourtesy of Shibuya Station District Area Management16
